Prom Night Reality

Everyone remembers their high school prom. The feeling of anxiety from shopping for what to wear, how to do their hair, and, of course, the major stressor is the prom theme.

As for me I cannot begin to understand these feelings because I never attended my high school prom. During that season I left my parochial school and transferred to a public school with 4 months left in the year. Therefore, I couldn't attend my 3.5 year high school prom and I couldn't afford to attend my public school prom because of money issues on mine and my parents faults. So I cannot imagine what it must've been like.

But when you watch it in movies it's like a Cinderella story. The good girl finds the cute bad guy and falls for him. Again not in my cards. They start off awkward and move to fighting due to someone's interference until they finally dance and kiss at the prom together.

Not many proms are like this. Yes it is a magical night for those who attend, but it's nothing like that. As for me being in a catholic school I could not attend their prom with another man because its goes against the churches beliefs. For that, with all honesty and meaning no disrespect, who are they to tell me who I can and cannot attend with? That's violating my right as human being, but that's a whole nother topic.

In all reality, prom is nothing like what they portray on television unless you attend a rich school and fall in to the wrong cliques. But after watching so many I begin to regret not attending one of them. This will only force me to make sure my child attends his/hers in the future so that they get that experience and will have those memories.

To me prom night was a movie night. To you it may have been the best moment in life. To others it was a waste of time. But to us for our children it's the saddening reality that they are growing up and moving on. So good luck to everyone as they begin to enter prom season again this year…
